1984 Dodge Rampage Rear Shocks
With less than 40K Rampages built, finding replacement parts for these cars is a bit difficult. One of the parts that can not be located easily are the rear shocks. After doing some research online and checking the Facebook forums it turns out that the rear shocks from a 1980 Dodge Aspen will work in the Rampage and are almost a direct fit.
The shocks shown here are these: KYB KG5546 Gas-A-Just Monotube Shock that I got from RockAuto.
They are an almost direct fit, I found that the original bolts that attaches the shock to the vehicle are too thin, and did not properly secure the shock. A trip to the local hardware store for two Grade 8 1/2 x 3 Flange bolts and associated washer and bolts. These slightly larger bolts will require boring out the mounting holes slightly to 1/2 inch, so you will also need a step-bit, or a good metal drill bit.
The KYB Shocks have a little more travel than the original shocks. It was a little difficult to get them into place. I found that by wrapping some 12 gauge wire around the top and bottom of the shock, compressing the shock on the floor and twisting the two ends of the wire together was enough to hold the shock in a compressed state.
I then mounted the shock to the body of the Rampage and then slowly undid the wire to let the shock expand into place.
Thats it. I have not driven the car yet, so I can not comment on the ride, but this solution came recommended by a few Rampage owners, so I think its legit.
